ROFLMAO

  • Craig: Palin said if she and husband Todd had had a sixth child, they had already picked a name for a boy joining siblings Track, Bristol, Willow, Piper and Trig.
  • "I always wanted a son named Zamboni," she said.
  • me: NO
  • THIS IS A PARODY
  • Craig: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/10/22/AR2008102201645.html
  • me: I have to assume that was a joke on her part
  • Craig: one would hope
  • me: If only the Washington Post used proper typographic formatting
  • And had followed that quote with "j/k"

“ Later in the evening, the star did an impression of Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin, imitating her trademark expression, “You betcha”, and adding that he had some advice for John McCain on “how to handle home girl”. He then launched into ‘99 Problems’, rapping, “I feel bad for you son. I got 99 problems but a bitch ain’t one”, resulting in the crowd going wild. „

5500:

I’ve never read it, nor set foot in Alaska, but I know the name of the Anchorage Daily News. Given that she obviously couldn’t reference one of the ‘Eastern media elite’ papers, if Sarah wanted to keep it real, couldn’t she have at least mentioned that as a news source?

Instead, it’s ‘Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me all these years.’

Which, I’m sorry, is just not even trying.

This is quite literally exactly what I thought when I heard about this clip. But then, the ADN has been critical of her lately, and we can’t be reading papers by negative nellies NOW CAN WE? It might HURT HER FEELINGS. Those journalists don’t show SUFFICIENT DEFERENCE.

“ That’s why I say I, like every American I’m speaking with, were ill about this position that we have been put in. Where it is the taxpayers looking to bail out. But ultimately, what the bailout does is help those who are concerned about the health care reform that is needed to help shore up our economy. Um, helping, oh, it’s got to be about job creation, too. Shoring up our economy, and getting it back on the right track. So health care reform and reducing taxes and reining in spending has got to accompany tax reductions, and tax relief for Americans, and trade — we have got to see trade as opportunity, not as, uh, competitive, um, scary thing, but one in five jobs created in the trade sector today. We’ve got to look at that as more opportunity. All of those things under the umbrella of job creation. „

Sarah Palin, in response to a question about why $700 billion in bailout funds should be directed to Wall Street firms rather than directly to taxpayers.

I have no words, and clearly she doesn’t either.

» Group Posts E-Mail Hacked From Palin Account | Threat Level from Wired.com

Seriously, people, this is why we don’t use private e-mail to conduct public policy. I don’t understand why this isn’t a huge campaign story, because it sure serves to underline the recklessness and irresponsibility of the McCain/Palin ticket, not to mention the basic corruption it so obviously implies if you’re using private e-mail to keep things secret.

» Palin to Meet Foreign Leaders at U.N.

fuddmain:

election08:

Sen. John McCain plans to introduce his running mate to some foreign leaders next week at the United Nations. Palin has never met a foreign leader, which isn’t really surprising for her, but is surprising for a VP candidate.

My question is this, Obama went overseas and had real talks with foreign leaders. Palin is going to New York City to shake some hands. This is supposed to give her some foreign policy credibility? How?

Palin is a mutant. I believe one of the 5 or 6 schools she attended was actually Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters. She has the uncanny ability to understand everything there is to know about something simply by looking at it. As soon as she peered across the Bering Strait at Russia, BANG, she had those bastards pegged. Just a minute or two in the room with these foreign leaders and she’ll be a foreign policy encyclopedia.

I believe her X-Men codename was Caribou Barbie, but it might have been P. Shizzle.

Hat-tip to Craig.

“ You don’t need to be a pointy-headed elitist to travel abroad. You need curiosity and a hunger to see the world. What kind of a person (who has the money) arrives at the age of 44 and has only been out of the country once, on an official tour to Iraq? Sarah Palin’s travel record is that of a provincial, not someone who is equipped to deal with global issues. „

Roger Ebert on Sarah Palin (via caroline)

You have to understand how much many people in America really hate and mistrust any country that is not America. (And indeed, how much they hate and mistrust half the people who live in America, but that’s a side issue.) For this demographic, it is an ACTIVE PLUS that Sarah Palin has barely left the country — because after all, there’s no better country than the US of A, so why bother to pay attention to how they do things anywhere else?

This dovetails nicely with this post on Kevin Drum’s blog today (why Tumblr won’t let me turn this into a link just because it’s in a “Quote” post, I don’t know) —

http://www.motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2008/09/knowledge_power.html

— in which he discusses neoconservatism’s distaste for actual knowledge of foreign policy and foreign relations, in favor of good old fashioned “gut feeling.” The level of horror this mindset inspires in me is so intense I don’t even know how to put it into words.

“ So here is what Giuliani and Palin didn’t know: Obama was working for a group of churches that were concerned about their parishioners, many of whom had been laid off when the steel mills closed on the south side of Chicago. They hired Obama to help those stunned people recover and get the services they needed—job training, help with housing and so forth—from the local government. It was, dare I say it, the Lord’s work—the sort of mission Jesus preached (as opposed to the war in Iraq, which Palin described as a “task from God.”) This is what Palin and Giuliani were mocking. They were making fun of a young man’s decision “to serve a cause greater than himself,” in the words of John McCain. They were, therefore, mocking one of their candidate’s favorite messages. Obama served the poor for three years, then went to law school. To describe this service—the first thing he did out of college, the sort of service every college-educated American should perform, in some form or other—as anything other than noble is cheap and tawdry and cynical in the extreme. „ TIME (via azspot) (via hungryghoast)

Tumblrs, please unbunch your panties.

barthel:

jgh:

Seriously, calm the F down. It’s incredibly disheartening to see people insinuate I am “stupid” because I have a different opinion, or that I’m in the tank for Gov. Palin because I respect way she’s handling herself, even if I disagree with her opinions. One of the things I really like about this election is the level of classiness from both parties in this campaign.

If you lose respect for me for liking a speech and thinking she’s handling herself as a savvy politician, that’s on you. It seems emotions are running high about the upcoming election, and for good reason, but understanding and respecting the appeal of a candidate is not the same as blatantly endorsing that candidate or her views.

Here’s the thing, though: Palin’s speech last night made it clear that they’re trying to position her as an anti-Obama, a “just folks” alternative to the out-of-touch elitist that the GOP is trying so hard to paint their opponent as. Liking her on a personal level is one thing—I made clear last night why the things about her life story that charm other people give me hives, but that’s totally my reaction—but “understanding and respecting the appeal” of that speech means thinking that her jabs at community organizers, good educations [EDIT—my bad, that was Rudy], and environmentalism were good things. You can maybe understand how some people might take that a little personally, since my college experience involved all three of those things, and that describes most of my friends and family. The Republican Party, lest we forget, has made massive hay over the last few decades by insulting, mocking, and expressing disgust at the beliefs, activities, and lifestyles of large numbers of Americans (gays, Latinos, the poor, etc.). Even ignoring Palin’s policy positions, by endorsing her speech last night, which included lots of that sort of talk, you’re endorsing the continued culture war, and you can’t expect everyone to be happy about that.

Remember, Republicans: Yours are not the only strongly-held values in America. I am an American citizen and patriot, and I like homosexual romance, book-learning, fine imported cheese, and foul-mouthed pop music about sex. Grow up and learn to deal with it.

“ One Republican strategist with close ties to the campaign described the candidate’s closest supporters as “keeping their fingers crossed” in hopes that additional information does not force McCain to revisit the decision. According to this Republican, who would discuss internal campaign strategizing only on condition of anonymity, the McCain team used little more than a Google Internet search as part of a rushed effort to review Palin’s potential pitfalls. Just over a week ago, Palin was not on McCain’s short list of potential running mates, the Republican said. „

With Palin revelations, McCain’s gamble is clearer - Los Angeles Times

I take that back: It wasn’t that they didn’t Google her. It’s that THAT’S ALL THEY DID.

FOR FUCK’S SAKE. I can’t stop using the word: irresponsible. This is the level of thought he brings to the most important decision of his campaign?

“ I agree Palin’s family should be off limits but there are larger issues that should be addressed. For example, the hypocriscy of the GOP and religious right. I’ve heard some call Palin’s daughter a hero for living up to her pro-life ideals. I live about a mile from a housing project filled with 16 and 17 year old women living up to their pro-life ideals but I can assure you I’ve never heard anyone, in particular those of the right wing variety, refer to them as anything but disgusting an sinful. So what is the difference, money? race? connections? „

NYT: Disclosures on Palin Raise Questions on Vetting Process - Readers’ Comments

I usually try not to read the comments, cos, I mean, hello. But this woman is so right on. So right on.

(via 5500)

DING DING DING! This wins today’s Award for Accuracy. This is the last time you’ll see me mention Palin’s pregnant daughter here, though, because it really is more of a personal matter than a political issue, despite the abovementioned basic hypocrisy on the part of cultural conservatives. That said: Palin’s ongoing corruption investigation, membership in a secessionist and anti-American political party, and proclivity for earmarked federal spending are all totally fair game! As is the breathtaking irresponsibility of John McCain’s choosing her as his running mate without even, apparently, doing so much as a fucking Google search. I understand that you don’t dig the computer websites, John, but that’s what you’ve got a staff for. But no, you had to run off half-cocked, you irresponsible fuck. You just showed this country why you’re the last fucking person we want in control of the button.

Seriously, why has nobody noticed that there’s only been one candidate in this whole election who has run an effective, clean, organized campaign that is achieving every one of its strategic goals? And that said candidate is the one who’s supposedly not “experienced” enough to be able to do such things?

Just gonna put this out there:

I think McCain’s choice of Sarah Palin for VP is ridiculous. It’s cynical, it’s poorly thought through, and she is patently not prepared for the duties of the Presidency. A few months ago she was on TV asking what the Vice President does all day. Not to mention the fact that she makes most right-wingers look like Dennis Kucinich. What Clarence Thomas is to mainstream black America, she is to mainstream women. This is a farce, and probably deserves to be treated as such.

However. I do please implore my fellow lefties: Can we watch our fucking mouths when we talk about her, please? I just saw a Daily Show sketch in which they made fun of her shrill voice, compared her to a sexy librarian from a Skinemax flick, and implied that she was John McCain’s trophy wife. All of that shit is DEEPLY SEXIST and NOT COOL AT ALL. I won’t even get fucking STARTED on the Failblog picture of her and her newborn son. That tone is GROSS and has no place in this debate. Knock it the fuck off before it even starts, people, or you really WILL send whatever bitter Hillary voters still exist (I think most of them are a myth, but some indubitably exist) straight into the scummy arms of a smirking GOP who were just waiting for us to pull this shit. Remember: These are EXACTLY the complaints Hillary’s voters had about the party and the media during the primary. I didn’t see it then but I am sure as hell seeing it now.
