“ The marketing of the band over the past few decades by their record label, Apple, has been aimed at creating a sense of apart-ness: Let lesser talents digitize their songs, feature on compilations, sell their music to samplers. The Beatles are different. This flatters listeners who were there, but setting the band apart from the rest of the pop world risks sterilizing their music and making newcomers as resentful as curious. „

Pitchfork: Album Reviews: The Beatles: Please Please Me (by Tom Ewing)

DING DING DING DING Award for Accuracy. Sterilization and resentment: perfectly encapsulates how I’ve historically felt about the band as a young person who most decidedly was not there.

every single article saying “Oh my god Twitter is making us morons” pisses me the fuck off to no end. Seriously. It’s always something that’s “making us morons” when really we are JUST MORONS.

Today’s Award For Accuracy, because, well, it’s funny, and it’s true. You could even say it’s funny because it’s true.

The wisdom itself, I’m now told, comes courtesy of Fight With Knives. FWK FTW.

“

From the Mormon church, reacting to protests against their campaign to pass Proposition 8 in California:

“People of faith have been intimidated for simply exercising their democratic rights. These are not actions that are worthy of the democratic ideals of our nation. The end of a free and fair election should not be the beginning of a hostile response in America.”

I’m afraid the church elders have it exactly backward here. Churches have every right to involve themselves in political issues, but if they do then they’re going to be treated as political actors. Protests, boycotts, op-eds, blog posts, and marches are exactly the democratic ideals of our nation, and being on the receiving end of them is what happens to anyone who enters the political fray. It’s a little late for them to pretend they didn’t know this.

Today’s Award for Accuracy. Ain’t nobody in this world got a “Get Out Of Hateful Bigotry Free” card. If you say hateful things, you can expect to be hated. Even if the magic books you found buried in the backyard told you to do it.

Notes on a bubble

tomewing:

The deregulation of rock writing in the early 00s allowed cheap critical credit to flood the sub-prime, or ”indie”, market, allowing bands to obtain careers despite not remotely having the talent to sustain them past the initial repayments. Rockonomists such as Harvell who issued warnings to this effect were labelled Jeremiahs by Blog St.

THIS WINS THE DECADE’S AWARD FOR ACCURACY. Like seriously, if they (me) gave a Booker of Bookers for the Award for Accuracy, indicating the most accurate comment of the last twenty-five years, this would be it.

“ White privilege is being able to attend churches over the years whose pastors say that people who voted for John Kerry or merely criticize George W. Bush are going to hell, and that the U.S. is an explicitly Christian nation and the job of Christians is to bring Christian theological principles into government, and who bring in speakers who say the conflict in the Middle East is God’s punishment on Jews for rejecting Jesus, and everyone can still think you’re just a good church-going Christian, but if you’re black and friends with a black pastor who has noted (as have Colin Powell and the U.S. Department of Defense) that terrorist attacks are often the result of U.S. foreign policy and who talks about the history of racism and its effect on black people, you’re an extremist who probably hates America. „

“ I agree Palin’s family should be off limits but there are larger issues that should be addressed. For example, the hypocriscy of the GOP and religious right. I’ve heard some call Palin’s daughter a hero for living up to her pro-life ideals. I live about a mile from a housing project filled with 16 and 17 year old women living up to their pro-life ideals but I can assure you I’ve never heard anyone, in particular those of the right wing variety, refer to them as anything but disgusting an sinful. So what is the difference, money? race? connections? „

NYT: Disclosures on Palin Raise Questions on Vetting Process - Readers’ Comments

I usually try not to read the comments, cos, I mean, hello. But this woman is so right on. So right on.

(via 5500)

DING DING DING! This wins today’s Award for Accuracy. This is the last time you’ll see me mention Palin’s pregnant daughter here, though, because it really is more of a personal matter than a political issue, despite the abovementioned basic hypocrisy on the part of cultural conservatives. That said: Palin’s ongoing corruption investigation, membership in a secessionist and anti-American political party, and proclivity for earmarked federal spending are all totally fair game! As is the breathtaking irresponsibility of John McCain’s choosing her as his running mate without even, apparently, doing so much as a fucking Google search. I understand that you don’t dig the computer websites, John, but that’s what you’ve got a staff for. But no, you had to run off half-cocked, you irresponsible fuck. You just showed this country why you’re the last fucking person we want in control of the button.

Seriously, why has nobody noticed that there’s only been one candidate in this whole election who has run an effective, clean, organized campaign that is achieving every one of its strategic goals? And that said candidate is the one who’s supposedly not “experienced” enough to be able to do such things?

“ If my writing gets pretentious and overly serious, I’m happy to be called on that. But if you read my piece, I don’t see anything approaching grad schoolishness; it is, after all, mostly about fucking. What I do see in my piece is enthusiasm, something that’s never cool, whereas what you get on Stereogum is the exact opposite: hysterical denunciation. That’s always pretty cool—were you to ask commenters what they were rebelling against, “What do you got?” seems a likely answer. „

“ The other thing that people seem to forget is that Weezer is never supposed to be cool, and that since day one, their brand has been about embracing whatever might make “cool kids” feel uncomfortable. Their tactics shift with the times: You’re all gonna be rockers? Well, we’ll be dorks. You’re all gonna sing cryptic lyrics? Well, we’re gonna overshare about our obsession with young Asian girls. You’re all gonna be dorks? Well, we’ll be rockers. You’re all inching up to your 30s and feeling anxious about adulthood? Well, we’re gonna embrace aging and do the whole “rock and roll dad” thing. That contrarian attitude is crucial to the band’s enduring commercial success — by rebelling against hipness, they tap into a mutant strain of populism. „
