‘That’

The thing a lot of people know about Meat Loaf is that he would do anything for love, oh, he would do anything for love, yes he would do anything for love but he won’t do ‘that.’

For some reason, probably radio editing, there’s a myth that ‘that’ is non-specific. The full version of I’d Do Anything For Love has an entire section that deals with what, precisely, Meat Loaf won’t do. 

The Meat’verse has complicated honour mechanic; while you might be bad for good, you also have certain principles, to distinguish you from the nebulous beasts and wolves with red roses. The hero is unable to settle down- the ultimate Dean (or Deanna) Winchester*- but has to cling to things against all sense. So far so trope-stuffed. 

I’d Do Anything For Love’s central arc is similarly standard on some levels; the hero is strong and brave and etc. but tragically unloved. In a mild twist on the usual Meat’verse formula, the potential paramour is actually coming along with the hero, at least for some of the way, it seems. Time for some In Depth Lyrical Examination-
