“This is why I think most of us could afford to stand down our participation in The Game. What it tends to draw out of us are critiques that sound fierce and penetrating but are mostly about arrogance and oneupsmanship and posturing. It’s tiresome. The critic, ever wary of a band like Vampire Weekend’s likely privilege, doesn’t look very far into what, if anything, they’re saying about class — so sure is she that her take on class issues will be more important and incisive. The critic, ever wary of the band’s interest in African music being dilettantish, doesn’t much ask how that influence is operating — so sure is she that her relationship with African music is deeper, more solemn, more respectful. And at some point we’re barely reading criticism anymore: we’re just watching the refereeing of a game we’re all too familiar with.” —

“He also told Rolling Stone magazine that he plans for his next record to be in the R&B/hip-hop genre. “I want to work with Pharrell {Williams}, Timbaland, Snoop {Dogg}, Kanye {West}, Eminem and just see what happens. It may be a disaster, it could be fantastic, but you don’t know until you try.”[31] John claims to be a big fan of Blackstreet’s 1996 hit, No Diggity. He is currently working on the upcoming album.” —

Is Elton John EGOTing? Somebody book this man a TV gig!

(Yes I am warming up for tonight’s Grammy-opening GaGa/Elton duet. Of course, Elton’s approval means that Lady GaGa is officially over, so we’d better enjoy her all we can in the next eight hours.)

Last Night's Dream

Frustrated by her obnoxious cell-phone conversation in a crowded movie theatre, I throw a large table at Julianne Moore’s character from 30 Rock, causing her to be hospitalized.

“That is the American tragedy of the early 21st century: a vital and self-renewing culture that attracts the world’s talent, and a governing system that increasingly looks like a joke. One thing I’ve never heard in my time overseas is “I wish we had a Senate like yours.” When Jimmy Carter was running for president in 1976, he said again and again that America needed “a government as good as its people.” Knowing Carter’s sometimes acid views on human nature, I thought that was actually a sly barb—and that the imperfect American public had generally ended up with the government we deserve. But now I take his plea at face value. American culture is better than our government. And if we can’t fix what’s broken, we face a replay of what made the months after the 9/11 attacks so painful: realizing that it was possible to change course and address problems long neglected, and then watching that chance slip away.” —

James Fallows, in a devastating piece on American decline. He seems to be saying that what we think are the real problems are just mirages that distract us from more insidious structural decay and a calcification of the democratic institutions that got us this far - but may not have the agility to get us much further. Sobering stuff. (via aatombomb) (via mikehudack) (via takethecityandrun)

This is a pretty excellent read — it really gets going around page 5. Don’t TL;DR it.

Well that was fast. Seriously, though, no Flash and no multi-tasking? What were they thinking?

——————

Re: Flash — they were thinking exactly this. Re: multi-tasking: I agree it should be there, and a 1GHz processor could probably swing it. It’s the only thing about the iPad that I think is unquestionably underwhelming. Otherwise, this thing is a potential game-changer for my industry.

Eat it.

Ugh. Today. I want to go home and eat my feelings but I only have 567 calories left according to the stupid app I downloaded. That’s not even ONE cheeseburger, let alone the number I would need to eat in order to consume myself into a state of mental incompetency.
