Ten years ago tonight:

I was at what was universally acknowledged to be one of the best Drama League parties of all time, at Ryan Callahan’s house. At midnight, his dad turned out the lights as a funny Y2K joke. At dawn, we left food all over the passed-out, sleeping Catlan. It was good times.

I guess the fact that my high school experience did not suck out loud is kinda rare, huh.

Editorial - Failed State - NYTimes.com → nytimes.com

The New York Times advocates for voting against every single incumbent on the New York state ballot next year. Frankly? I’m with them. Clean slate time. Sorry to the very few non-corrupt lawmakers out there, some of whom I’m sure could be spared; but when you vote this year, really ask yourself if you’re voting for the right candidate, considering the mismanagement of this state for the last several years. In this case, more experience is worse, because it’s experience that’s taught them how to drive this state off a cliff.

An Extremely Important Point About AVATAR That I Neglected To Make Last Night

Sam Worthington is the hottest man on the face of the planet and I want to make babies with him. Or at least try reeeeaaaally hard.

Sure that’s predictable, he’s “classically handsome” or whatever, but if him being FUCKING HOT is predictable then I don’t want to be a wild and crazy maverick. Or something. Whatever, I’m so alone.

“This decade will one day be remembered by economists (in China) as the last period in American History when people had a reasonable expectation of employment and comfortable housing. Because it’s pretty much a hilarious “mash up” of The Road and Idiocracy from here on out” —

The Awl: The End Of The 00s - Horrible Decade of Constant Terror Doesn’t Officially End Until the World Does, In 2012, by Ken Layne

See, you laugh, but it’s not funny, because it’s true. Unlike things that are funny because they’re true. No, this one is so true it’s not funny.

Robert Pattinson Replaces Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man 4

To all on my dashboard who were reblogging this: did you actually click the link? It’s an April Fool’s joke from eight months ago. Go back about your business. Tobey Maguire is still theoretically in the next movie, for what that’s even worth.

Gettin’ my Maura Johnston fact-check on. The internet: If a tree falls in the forest, and somebody just tells you about it, did that tree fall?

So, AVATAR.

Gonna jump on the bandwagon a couple weeks late and simply say that AVATAR was one of the best moviegoing experiences I’ve had in years, and it made me feel the way I often did coming out of movies in high school, when thinking about the movie you’d just seen was earnest and new and completely unencumbered by seen-it-all cynicism. (Seeing it in my hometown mall’s movie theatre might’ve helped with that. Flashback alert!) It wasn’t a perfect movie, but it was an experience I’m sooooo glad I had. I didn’t see anywhere near enough movies this year, but yeah, it probably runs away with the “my favorite” award, with UP providing the only real competition. Three cheers for computers and monomaniacs, be they individual (James Cameron) or institutional (Pixar).

“(W)e weren’t cynical about having been given ten, 12, 13 hours—whatever we had for any season from HBO. All of that was an incredible gift. The Godfather narrative, even including the third film, the weak one, is like… what? Nine hours? … And look how much story they were able to tell. We were getting more than that for each season. So goddamn it, you better have something to say. That sounds really simple, but it’s actually a conversation that I don’t think happens on a lot of serialized drama.” —

DAVID SIMON - Vice Magazine

And on the very first page of the interview, David Simon says something powerfully insightful. God fucking bless.

EDITED TO ADD: OK, am on page two now and it’s just getting better and better, every interview with this man is a gold mine and a totally essential read.
